WHITECHAPEL MARKET STALLS PROJECT

Trapped in Zone One is working with Tower Hamlets Council to create a new artwork for Whitechapel Market. Together with artists Alex Cullen and Limma Ali our design will feature across over 100 market stalls along Whitechapel Road.

To create a design, a series of consultation and workshops took place which featured, workshops with young people with Mulberry School for Girls, partnership programme with The Feast engagement with young people, research and engagement with Tower Hamlets Archive Library, engagement with market stall holders and public in Whitechapel Market, participating in the Season of Bangla Drama Festival with a workshop at Saree Day event at Brady Arts Centre, a walking activity along Whitechapel Market, discuss themes through a creative activity at the Idea Store in Whitechapel and public consultation workshops at Tower Hamlets Town Hall.

ENGAGMENT AT WHITECHAPEL MARKET

CONSULTATION AT TOWER HAMLETS TOWN HALL

Feeback from consulation with young people by The Feast,

If your own words, how would you describe Whitechapel Market? - Whitechapel Market is the real East End. It is a bustling and diverse market known for its array of Bangladeshi goods, from fresh produce and imports to textiles and cultural items. It reflects the rich multi-cultural society of London and people come from far and wide just to visit its loud and exciting markets and shops.

How would you like Whitechapel Market to look in the future? - I would be nervous that too many changes would strip Whitechapel of its uniqueness, identity, and heritage. However, my only suggestion would be for it to have the hygiene, organsiation and cleanliness of Spitalfields Market.

The chosen themes we’ll be exploring for our design based on elements associated with Whitechapel Market are:

  • Fruit and Vegetables

  • Clothing: Shawl, head scarf, saree and kameez patterns (Jamdani)

  • Jewellery

  • Asian Sweet

  • Fish

  • Landmark: Town Hall, Whitechapel Station, Bus No. 25, Royal London Hospital

  • East London Mosque - Islamic Pattern

  • Bengali Typography

TESTIMONAL

Trapped in Zone One have a great reputation in Tower Hamlets, so it was exciting to get the opportunity to work with them on a unique public art project. Despite tricky structural limitations TiZO’s enthusiasm, experience and skill was ever-present from the day one and all their staff were a pleasure to work with. The final designs they produced encapsulated an open-ended brief in a succinct yet amazingly expressive way. Perhaps what shone through most was how thorough their consultation work was, which was evidently helped by the strength and depth of their networks across the borough. This meant that lots of meaningful and productive conversations were had with local residents – particularly younger people. The workshops were excellently run and fostered lots of meaningful and productive conversations.
